San Clemente is located on the Pacific coast about 60 miles from Los Angeles and 50 miles to San Diego. Ole Hanson founded the city of San Clemente in mid-1920. He had seen San Clemente on a previous trip and had a dream to build a Spanish city by the sea. He felt it was just the spot for those who yearned for the "country"life and slower pace.
San Clemente is a stable, as well as balanced, community which exhibits much local pride. The residents love to claim they have the "World's Finest Climate."
Dana Point
Dana Point is approximately one-half way between Los Angeles and San Diego.
Incorporated in 1989, the City of Dana Point is named after Richard Henry Dana Jr. (1815-1882), a Harvard-trained lawyer, seaman, and author of the classic sea journal, Two Years Before the Mast (1840). In his journal, Dana documents his voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to California on the merchant ship, Pilgrim. Therein, Dana describes the area once known as Capistrano Bay, as "the most romantic spot on the California coast". Today, Capistrano Bay is known as Dana Point.
San Juan Capistrano
San Juan Capistrano, is located just one mile from the Pacific ocean. The city developed around the San Juan Capistrano mission. The mission is famous for the swallows who leave on Oct 23 and return each year on March 19. The Serra chapel is one of the oldest buildings still in use in the entire state. It is known as the "Jewel of the Missions" because it is such a beautiful mission and area.
San Juan Capistrano, with a town center, still has a small town, close community feel. It is close to the ocean but there are also rolling hills and horse ranches.
Laguna Beach
Laguna Beach, the second oldest city in Orange County, is a luxury, seaside community bordered by Monarch Beach to the south and Corona Del Mar to the north. The only access to Laguna Beach is by The Pacific Coast Highway north or south, or through Laguna Canyon to the east.
